It was a bright day in the human world. Bright and hot. A figure slipped past the many humans that flanked the streets of Okinawa, Japan, careful not to touch them and arouse suspicion. Her name was Kathryn, and she was being tracked by the Soul Society, not a good position to be in. For what? She knew, but it was a false accusation. She instinctively gripped the hilt of Sui-getsu, her Zanpacu-to.
Yes, she was a soul reaper. The captain of squad five of the Thirteen Court Guard Squadron. She was set apart from the others, though. Her Zanpacu-to is different. Its size was not judged by her spirit energy, nor it’s power. It is one from ancient times, one that came to her from it’s own free will. The spirit inside of the sword, Sui-getsu, where it gets its name, is a demonic spirit.
That is why she is being hunted down. The elite soul reapers found out, and didn’t trust its wielder. They thought she would turn against them. So she was followed, never left alone for a second. On the third day of this, a menos grande followed her to the soul society, but Kathryn didn’t know. After purifying it, they turned on Kathryn, thinking Sui-getsu possessed her and led it there.
After being sentenced to death, they put Kathryn in the repentance cell. But one day, when someone brought her food, she escaped. Then she fled right to the human world, where she thought she would be safe. But one day a message came, “You are not going to hide from us any longer. We sent Byakuya and Renji after you. We can’t let a threat like you like.” Byakuya and Renji; a captain and lieutenant, the only two that stood a chance against Kathryn. With both on her trail, she knew she was in trouble.
Kathryn broke free of the main streets, finding herself in the grounds of a high school. She hurried to the other side, not wanting to be out in the open. Suddenly she heard the distinctive sound of a sword being drawn from its scabbard.
“Roar, Sabi-maru!” Said a voice. As she turned, Kathryn felt a searing pain in her shoulder. The end of a Zanpacu-to was digging into her left shoulder, her sword arm. It had cut the tendon. Now she was helpless. Renji stood before her, his flaming red hair blowing in the strong wind. He pulled the hilt of his Zanpacu-to, pulling the end of it free from Kathryn’s shoulder, leaving a deeper gash.
“So you thought you could run, did you? You of all people should know that is out of the question.” Renji said, a smirk on his tattooed face. Another figure slipped from the shadows, Byakuya. His long black hair whipped across his face sword sheathed.
“I didn’t do anything. Why don’t any of you believe me?” Kathryn asked, holding her injured arm.
“We saw it for ourselves. You lead the menos grande to the soul society! We should have never trusted you or that demon blade you hold!” He sheathed his Zanpacu-to, instead putting Kathryn into a Kido spell. Her arms were pulled together, bound as if by a rope. “You’re ours now.”
“Why don’t you just kill me now? It would be simple enough.”
Byakuya suddenly appeared by her side, and a few seconds later she could feel the wound on her side where he struck. It didn’t even look like he had unsheathed his sword, much less used it on her. It was the reason her was so powerful, he could move without anyone seeing. “Our orders were to capture you.” He said simply.
“And we follow them, were not like you.” Renji brought his fist down on her head, knocking her out.
Kathryn awoke in the cell where she was kept before, but this time she was bound to the ground by a chain around her ankle. She sat up, rubbing her head. The wounds she got during the confrontation were healed, but her sword arm was not reacting to her thoughts, it remained useless. Sui-getsu was nowhere to be seen, and she couldn’t even feel its familiar spirit energy.
There was the rustle of movement outside; the guards were stopping someone from coming in. A muffled voice could be heard through the thick walls. It was high-pitched, but definitely a male soul reaper, “Please, I have food for the prisoner.” He said. Now she knew who it was. One of squad four, the weakest squad. They were mainly the ones who ran errands for the higher-ups.
“You may pass.” Said the guard. The door opened, blinding Kathryn. The cell was always dark, and the walls were specially made to stop the prisoner from feeling any spirit pressure, cutting them off from the outside. The door then shut, and the soul reaper who had come in jumped. He was short, and looked to be around fifteen, with bluish-black hair.
“Here, I have some food. It’s not much, but at least they feed you.” He put the tray down in front of Kathryn, but she only scoffed at the bread and water. “Uh, my name is Hanataro, I will be bringing you food everyday.” He said uneasily, hands at his side.
“Can the guards here us from in here?” She asked after a pause. An idea was forming in her mind, and it might work if Hanataro complied.
“No, I don’t think so. Not if we whisper.” He answered.
Kathryn brought her voice down, “Do you know where my Zanpacu-to is?”
“Yes, why?” He was getting a bad feeling about these questions. Kathryn leaned closer.
“Can you get it for me? I need to get out of here. I didn’t lead the menos grande here, you must believe me.” She said pulling at the chain.
“Oh, I do trust you. I saw it all from here when it came. I tried to help you before, but since it was just me…” Kathryn held up her hand to quiet him.
“Good. Get me my sword, then. You are the only one who can. I need to leave here.” With that she turned her back to him, grabbing the bread and taking a bite, ending the conversation there.
Hanataro nodded and left, the stone door opening for him, light flooding the darkness. “Now what have I gotten myself into.” He asked himself, his mind subconsciously taking him to the storeroom where all the confiscated weapons were. One sword seemed to beckon to Hanataro, the rush of spiritual pressure greater than he ever though possible. He grabbed it and stuffed the average sized Zanpacu-to into his shiakso, walking away like he wasn’t going to let a dangerous prisoner escape.
Hanataro crossed the long, narrow bridge to the repentance cell, the dominating white tower casting everything in shadows. The guards closely watched his approach; not strong enough to even sense Sui-getsu’s spiritual pressure, ready to let him in. The tray in his hands was shaking from Hanataro’s nervousness. Sui-getsu was pulsating, making his condition worse.
The door grated to a stop behind him as it shut, and he let his eyes adjust to the darkness that always hung around. He could hear Kathryn’s ragged breath somewhere in the middle of the floor, the chain that kept her from going anywhere rattling.
“Give Sui-getsu to me. Then leave, try to run away. They will know you let me out, they will track you down, and they will kill you. You can’t come with me, don’t even think it.” Kathryn said, pulling the chain as far as it would go. Hanataro nodded, leaving the cell as fast as he could go without the guards being suspicious.
The Zanpacu-to trembled in her hand, Sui-getsu wanted to talk. Kathryn closed her eyes. “Yes, Sui-getsu? Why have you called me here, to the depths of my mind?” She asked as her eyes opened again. Even though it was in her mind, Kathryn knew it was Sui-getsu’s domain. The place looked to be a forest, lush and flourishing, with a path separating two parts of it. But all the color was drained, and the wind stood still, as if time had stopped.
Out of the distance came a figure. It was clothed in a hooded black robe, head down. It was a full head taller than Kathryn, who was already taller than average. When it came to the soul reaper, the figure looked up, pulling the hood back.
