Glassy Eyes
By Roseh
A scream. Blood splattered across the floor…the walls. It was everywhere. “Please…leave me alone…no…no…STOP!!” a female voice said as she let out a spine-tingling shriek that sounded like a banshee. And then, there was a sickening thud and splatter as she fell on to the ground limply. The honey dipped eyes that graced her fragile face, now only glassy pools of reflection…dull and dead-like. Her left arm, had been bent in the opposite direction…the elbow joint shattered completely. Her legs were broken, signs that they were smashed by something were quite evident…you could tell by the large bruises followed by the slight ‘slump’ of them. Her neck was a mess. A deep cut ran along her throat, blood cascading down like a stream…occasionally spurting out because the body was still struggling to breath. Gasping for breath…still trying to survive.
“What a cheesy death.” She garbled. Elly Stones never did believed in witchcraft and spells. Neither did Tyler. The disappointed female who had blurted out the previous statement sighed, pale green eyes rolled as she hung upside down, her head hovering over the wood flooring as her feet were up in the air, lime green socks decorating her freezing feet. Her torso laid flat on the couch, her legs obviously resting on the backrest of the couch, black hair that went down to the middle of her back touching against the ground that was just as immensely frozen as her feet. A male figure sat opposite of Elly, sprawled out against the couch arm, obviously bored with the gore movie that they were watching.
“Well…I don’t know about you but…this is a waste of time. This movie is about as boring as watching you try to climb a tree.” Elly smirked, eyes darting to the male.
Cheeks went red as she said this, partly concealing the freckles that speckled the upper part of the male’s nose and only a little of his cheeks. Just barely. Dark brunette hair that went down to about his jaw flared out at the ends…looking like it was flipped up, was messily hidden under a grey beanie with an orange flame design, bangs and the tips of his hair poking out. Bluish-grey eyes narrowed as a scowl formed on his peachy face.
“Hey! Just because I can’t climb a tree doesn’t mean you can go on and on—teasing me about it!” he said, flailing his arms about to add drama.
“Cool it, Ty. Just a joke.” She said and sighed.
“It better be!” He snapped, the frown still on his face.
Elly turned back to the screen, not bothering to ramble on an argument with him…though she’d win. She always won when it came to arguments with Tyler Ian Matchison. Always. Today she decided to wear a grey fitted t-shirt with a band logo slapped across it. Faded jeans graced her legs as she remained in her ‘Upside down mode’, reaching for the remote that was rested on the coffee table…a bit too far away for her liking. Tyler, on the other hand, was your average ‘MOM-I-WANNA-BE-A-ROCKSTAR’ 13-year- old, a red baggy hooded sweater slid over a yellow t-shirt…light colored jeans that were slightly baggy, had a chain that connected to his wallet and then clipped to a pant hoop. The wallet linked to the chain being slid into his back pocket.
“Mine now.” He said and snatched the remote from the coffee table with ease, him being in the upright position.
“HEY. I WANTED IT FIRST!” She wailed and swung around to her own upright position, instantly trying to pry the remote from his hands.
“Wait! Wait!” He said, wincing as her fingernails dug into his skin. He gave a slight cough, as if trying to change his voice. “Children. Children…you guys should be doing productive with your time…like, going outside. You need the fresh air!” He imitated.
“Is that supposed to be…my mom?” she asked and blinked, slightly confused. Her mother was the only one who cared about the two staying cooped in with a glowing box.
“Why yes dear, I believe it is…otherwise I wouldn’t make my voice sound so perfect and lady-like.” He said, keeping that high pitched, girly tone in his voice. “I say we listen to her this time and go outside.” He stated in his normal voice and stood, walking towards the door, turning off the T.V. on his way there.
“Eh, hey wait!” she said quickly and slid on her shoes, scrambling after him as he headed outside. She ran into his back, causing him to stumble forward but remain balance. She rubbed her nose feverishly and glared daggers at his back.
“Why’d you stop?” She hissed like a snake, anger in her tone. He didn’t need to respond. A group of kids their age passed by them, all of them wearing an identical and equally odd pendant around their necks…eyes focused straight ahead.
“You know them?”
“Nope.”
“Then why did you stop?”
“Because I don’t like those kids. They go to our school…never liked ‘em.” He stated firmly, now deciding to move his legs that supported his lanky figure.
“Oh.” She said as she walked alongside him, noticing they were walking in the same direction. Elly didn’t think much of it, nor did Tyler. When it was time to turn, they noticed that the group in front kept going straight ahead. They were about to enter the park they had came across until a voice made them stop from moving.
“Hey.” A male called as he walked up to the two, short blonde hair having traces of brown. “Whatcha’ doing?” he asked, trying to make a conversation.
Elly turned around to face the boy and studied the pendant around the boys neck and locked eyes with him. “Oh, we were just about to go to the park,” she said with a friendly smile, “you?” Tyler turned around finally and faced the boy, not speaking. ‘Perfectly normal for him. He doesn’t like to talk to people he doesn’t like…’ she thought and shoved her hands in her pocket.
“Well, my group of friends and I would like to invite you guys to come with us. Y’know…hang out?” he explained, “So, would you like to come?” he asked, hope welling in his eyes.
“Sounds cool. I’d love to go.” She said and nodded.
“And your friend?”
No reply. Tyler looked down at his shoes, as if he didn’t hear him at all. A hard nudge in the side whipped him into shape. “I’ll go too,” he muttered irritably, managing to keep his eyes averted and not able to lock on the other male’s eyes. Typical.
“Great then!” the boy exclaimed and beamed, nodding towards his group. “C’mon then!” He said and urged them to follow. Elly walked after him, grabbing Tyler by the arm and dragging him with. After a short distance of walking, the group came to a halt…stopping in front of an abandoned house. They walked in, the house still holding many possessions…as if someone had just walked out the door and never came back. Portraits were hung up, glass figurines set in place, the mantel decorated with a few birthday cards. Everything was in a thick layer of dust though, like a blanket of snow in a winter morning. Untouched.
No reply or sounds came from Elly or Tyler as they looked around, being herded into the basement. Pentagrams, books, and candles were set around the room, the soft glow of the fire lighting the place up.
“This…isn’t what I call hanging out.” Tyler said, breaking the silence.
“What is this place?” Elly said to the blonde haired boy, raising an eyebrow in confusion.
“This place…this abandoned house…it contained various things that are useful to us. You see, we found spells…incantations…things that could be beneficial to this polluted world…it could preserve the soul…make it immortal. Anything…name it…it’s in here. The power to defy physics—everything.” He said and picked up a book, holding it as if a baby.
“Witchcraft? No way. I’m out.” Tyler said and backed out, starting towards the door.
“Don’t be a sissy.” Elly scorned and pulled him back over. “It’s not like their going to use it on us…we’re friends. Right?” She said and turned towards the group.
The blonde haired boy smiled, “Of course. As long as this secret is kept with you two…and only you.” He said.
“Now…why are we here?” Elly asked and blinked.
“You’ll know soon enough…” Blondie said and sat down around a giant pentagram, seated in the top point. All others took a seat around the chalk-drawn symbol…Elly and Tyler reluctantly sitting. Blondie opened a book, flipping a few pages and began to chant. The others joining in shortly. Elly and Tyler sat there, exchanging glances. What had they gotten into?
~~
After what had seemed like forever, something weird began to happen. “Recite the words and grow in power…” Blondie murmured in a monotone voice…much more different than that other…softer voice.
A sort of cup filled with liquid was passed down, each person reciting words and then taking a sip, passing it on to the next. When it was Elly’s turn, she hesitated.
“Elly…don’t.” Tyler said, grabbing the arm that held the drink.
“What? It won’t do any harm. It’s not real. Just go with the flow Ty. Loosen up.” She said and took a deep breath, reciting the words and taking a drink. She coughed, and handed the cup to him. He took it, was about to do it…and stopped. As he began to look around, he saw something strange began to go on. The people before him who were sipping from the cup…they began shaking. Slightly at first…but then worse…as if freezing. Then it became violent. And almost sadly, he turned to his friend…suffering the same symptoms as well. He sat there helpless…then finally reacted.
“ELLY!” He shouted and grabbed her, shaking her. “SNAP OUT OF IT!”
Her eyes rolled up in the back of her head, blood trickling down her mouth. He put his head to her chest. She wasn’t breathing. He couldn’t find it in him to cry, or talk for that matter. Silently, in the still of the night…he got up, and left…left the lifeless bodies that had drunk from the cup…and said those words…’Death will cast a shadow over me…pardon me from it’s lifetime sentence and live again…in full power and reign above all.’
It was as if time had stopped. All was quiet. And the sound of Tyler’s footsteps down the sidewalk were the only thing that broke it. He walked up the street into his house and sighed, walking in. Looking around, nothing had changed. Except maybe the fact that his parents were working late. Again.
He turned to the T.V., emitting that slight glow that consumed the dark room…set on some random channel. He was about to walk away, towards the stairs…but he stopped. He didn’t leave the T.V. on. Surely his parents must’ve done it…but they were all for saving electricity and would never do such a careless act.
…And there…sitting on the couch, hands on their lap…was…
Elly.
He froze, fear welling in his eyes as she turned to him, eyes rolled up in the back of her head. She smiled…smiled cruelly. “Hey Ty, what’s up?” she said nonchalantly.
“N-no! YOU’RE DEAD.” He said and backed up against the wall.
“Hey. This reminds me of something…a movie maybe…funny huh?” She said and stood, walking towards him.
He didn’t talk, not at all. He couldn’t. Tyler just remained there, letting his eyesight fade to black…falling on the ground in a sickening thud. His eyes, glassy…pools of reflection…
